Class 2 Water Damage

« Back to Glossary Index

Class 2 Water Damage means water has affected an entire room (or multiple materials) with significant absorption—like soaked carpets, damp drywall, or wet padding. It’s the “middle ground” of water disasters—not minor, but not yet catastrophic.

Key Signs:

  • Large area (5%-40% of a room)
  • Porous materials involved (carpet, drywall, insulation)
  • Water wicked up walls (12-24 inches)
  • Cushioned flooring saturated (pad under carpet)

Common Causes:
🚽 Overflowing toilet (clean water)
🧺 Burst washing machine hose
🪣 Aquarium/waterbed leak

ExampleA ruptured shower drain soaked the bathroom carpet and leaked into the adjacent bedroom, requiring Class 2 extraction and drying.

⚠️ Danger Zone: Class 2 can escalate to Class 3 if not dried within 48 hours (mold risk!).

Restoration Steps:
1️⃣ Extract water (subfloor pumps, wet vacs)
2️⃣ Remove padding (carpet pad can’t be saved)
3️⃣ Flood cuts (cut out bottom 12″ of wet drywall)
4️⃣ Aggressive drying (air movers + dehumidifiers)

💡 Pro Tip: Save the carpet only if extraction begins within 24 hours!

📈 Insurance Note: Class 2 claims cost 3-5x more than Class 1 due to material replacements.

🚨 VisualLike a water balloon popped in your room—not a tsunami, but enough to ruin your day! 🎈💦
