Category 2 Water Damage
« Back to Glossary Index
Category 2 water damage involves “gray water”—water that is moderately contaminated and may cause discomfort or illness if touched or ingested. It’s more serious than Category 1 (clean water) but less hazardous than Category 3 (black water).
Common Sources:
- Washing machine or dishwasher leaks (with soap, detergent, or food particles).
- Toilet overflows with urine (no feces).
- Sump pump failures or broken aquariums.
- Water from a shower or bathtub (with some cleaning products or body oils).
Risks:
- Contains bacteria, mold, or chemicals that can irritate skin, eyes, or lungs.
- If untreated for 24–48 hours, it can turn into Category 3 (black water) as bacteria multiply.
- Can cause mold growth or structural damage if ignored.
What to Do:
- Act quickly: Dry the area within 24–48 hours to prevent escalation.
- Wear gloves and masks if cleaning small spills yourself.
- Call professionals for larger spills or if water has soaked into carpets, drywall, or furniture. They’ll sanitize and ensure no hidden moisture remains.
- Porous materials (like carpets or mattresses) may need disposal if heavily contaminated.
Never ignore Category 2 water—it can become dangerous fast! Proper cleanup keeps your home safe and healthy.
