Category 2 Water Damage

« Back to Glossary Index

Category 2 water damage involves gray water—water that is moderately contaminated and may cause discomfort or illness if touched or ingested. It’s more serious than Category 1 (clean water) but less hazardous than Category 3 (black water).

Common Sources:

  • Washing machine or dishwasher leaks (with soap, detergent, or food particles).
  • Toilet overflows with urine (no feces).
  • Sump pump failures or broken aquariums.
  • Water from a shower or bathtub (with some cleaning products or body oils).

Risks:

  • Contains bacteria, mold, or chemicals that can irritate skin, eyes, or lungs.
  • If untreated for 24–48 hours, it can turn into Category 3 (black water) as bacteria multiply.
  • Can cause mold growth or structural damage if ignored.

What to Do:

  • Act quickly: Dry the area within 24–48 hours to prevent escalation.
  • Wear gloves and masks if cleaning small spills yourself.
  • Call professionals for larger spills or if water has soaked into carpets, drywall, or furniture. They’ll sanitize and ensure no hidden moisture remains.
  • Porous materials (like carpets or mattresses) may need disposal if heavily contaminated.

Never ignore Category 2 water—it can become dangerous fast! Proper cleanup keeps your home safe and healthy.
