Black Water
« Back to Glossary Index
Black water is extremely dirty, dangerous water that contains harmful germs, sewage, or chemicals. It’s the worst type of water damage (called Category 3) because it can make people very sick.
Where It Comes From:
- Toilet overflows with sewage.
- Floodwater from storms, rivers, or heavy rain.
- Water mixed with poop, chemicals, or rotting garbage.
Why It’s Dangerous:
Touching or breathing near black water can cause serious health problems like stomach bugs, skin rashes, or lung issues. This is because it’s filled with bacteria (like E. coli), viruses, or mold.
What to Do:
- Call professionals right away. Cleaning black water requires special tools, protective suits, and training.
- Soaked items like carpets, furniture, or drywall usually can’t be saved and must be thrown out.
- Never try to clean it yourself—it’s too risky and could spread germs.
Black water is an emergency! Always let experts handle it to keep your home and family safe.
