Category 3 water damage, or “black water”, is the most dangerous type of water damage. It’s filled with really gross stuff like sewage, chemicals, or harmful germs that can make you seriously sick. This is a big emergency and needs to be handled by pros ASAP!
Where It Comes From:
- Sewage backups or toilets overflowing with poop.
- Floodwater from storms, rivers, or hurricanes (mixed with dirt, garbage, or chemicals).
- Water that’s been sitting around too long and grows nasty bacteria or mold.
Why It’s So Dangerous:
- Touching or breathing near black water can cause serious health problems like vomiting, diarrhea, skin infections, or trouble breathing.
- It’s packed with dangerous germs (like E. coli), viruses, mold, or even chemicals from factories.
What to Do:
- Get out of the area and don’t touch anything! This isn’t a DIY job.
- Call water damage professionals immediately. They have special gear (like full-body suits and masks) to clean it safely.
- Throw away anything it touched—like carpets, furniture, or drywall. These items can’t be cleaned properly and might stay contaminated.
- Pros will disinfect the area, tear out ruined materials, and stop mold from growing.
