Category 1 Water Damage

« Back to Glossary Index

Category 1 water damage involves clean water that doesn’t pose an immediate health risk. This is the least severe type of water damage and usually comes from sources that are not contaminated.

Common Sources:

  • Broken or leaking water supply lines (pipes, faucets).
  • Overflowing sinks or bathtubs (with no contaminants).
  • Rainwater or melting snow (before touching the ground).
  • Appliance leaks (like a washing machine hose break).

Risks:
While Category 1 water is safe at first, it can turn into Category 2 (gray water) or Category 3 (black water) if left untreated. After 24–48 hours, bacteria or mold can grow, making it dangerous.

What to Do:

  • Act fast to dry the area with fans, dehumidifiers, or towels.
  • Fix the source of the leak (e.g., repair broken pipes).
  • If water sits for too long or spreads to carpets/walls, call professionals to prevent mold or contamination.

Even though Category 1 seems harmless, quick cleanup is key to keeping it from becoming a bigger problem!
