Secondary Damage
« Back to Glossary Index
Secondary damage is the extra destruction that happens after the initial water leak or flood, often because the area wasn’t dried fast or thoroughly enough. It’s like a “chain reaction” of problems caused by lingering moisture!
Common Types:
- Mold growth (sneaks in within 24-72 hours)
- Wood warping/swelling (doors won’t close, floors buckle)
- Rust/corrosion (metal pipes or appliances rotting)
- Paint/blistering (bubbles on walls or ceilings)
- Bad smells (from bacteria in damp materials)
Why It’s Worse Than the Original Leak:
- Often costs more to fix than the initial water damage
- Can create health hazards (like toxic mold)
- Sometimes isn’t covered by insurance if deemed “preventable”
Example: After ignoring a small dishwasher leak, the homeowner later found black mold under the floor—a classic case of secondary damage.
💡 Golden Rule: “Dry it right the first time, or pay twice!”
⚠️ Warning: Secondary damage can start within hours—speed is everything!
