Gray Water

« Back to Glossary Index

Gray water is slightly dirty water from sinks, showers, or washing machines—not totally clean, but not sewage either. It might contain soap, hair, or food bits but usually doesn’t have dangerous poop or chemicals (that’s called “black water”).

Why it matters in water damage:

  • Can grow bacteria or mold if left sitting
  • Needs cleaning within 48 hours to stay safe
  • Requires gloves (but not a full hazmat suit)

Example: When the washing machine leaked gray water, we had to dry the floor fast before it turned gross.

⚠️ Warning: Gray water can turn into black water if left too long!
