Relative Humidity (RH)
« Back to Glossary Index
Relative Humidity (RH) is a percentage that measures how much moisture is in the air compared to the max it can hold at that temperature. In water damage work, it tells crews if wet materials will dry or grow mold.
Why It Matters:
- High RH (60%+) = Slow drying, mold risk ☔
- Low RH (30%-50%) = Ideal for drying ✅
- 100% RH = Air is “full” (like fog or a bathroom mirror steaming up!)
Example: The drying team kept the basement at 40% RH to dry the floors fast without cracking the wood.
Pro Tip: RH changes with temperature—warm air holds more water! That’s why dehumidifiers warm air slightly while drying.
🌤️ Simple Version: “The air’s ‘wetness meter’!” 0% = Desert, 100% = Swimming in air!
